This is a work in progress, but I wanted to get an outline of this family on the blog. I will be updating this as I continue my research.
Woodford Hector Dulaney was born 16 March 1822 in Loudoun
Co., Virginia. He was the son of
Zachariah and Mary Eleanor (Braden) Dulaney.
Zachariah and Mary Eleanor had 4 other known children: Robert Leroy (born 1818), Elizabeth Ann (“Lizzie”)
(born 1820), Mary Eleanor (“Molly”) (born 1823), and Charles Fenton (born
1825).
On 18 April 1829, Woodford’s mother died at Waterford,
Loudoun Co., Virginia. He was 7 years
old. According to a letter written 5
July 1829 by Sarah Hough (in Waterford) to Mary Braden (in Indiana), Zachariah and his small children continued to
live in Waterford after Mary Eleanor’s death.
But by the summer of 1832, Zachariah had left Virginia to go west and
had abandoned his children. The younger
ones were taken in by their uncle, Noble S. Braden.
According to the journal of his brother, Robert, in the
fall of 1840, Woodford was clerking in a store in either Waterford, Virginia or Washington City (now
D.C.). It seems that sometime in late
1840, Woodford arrived in Louisville, Kentucky. A biography in America's Successful Men of Affairs (ed. Henry Hall, New York Tribune, 1896) says that Woodford came to Louisville in January 1841.
By November 1847, several members of the family were living
in Louisville. In his autobiography, Robert Dulaney wrote, "Upon arrival at
Louisville, I put up at the Franklin House where I spent the next two weeks
visiting relatives and seeing Pa, Molly, Hector, and Charlie."
On 4 February
1851, Woodford married Margaret Josephine Cawthon, daughter of Benjamin
Franklin Cawthon and his wife, Margaret.
I have not yet done much research on Margaret, so I will be updating as I find additional details.
Their first child,
Florence Braden Dulaney, was born 17 November 1851 in Louisville.
Their next known
child, Charles Cawthon Dulaney, was born 17 June 1854; he died 6 September
1855, aged 15 months.
A daughter, Maggie
Woodford Dulaney, was born 27 June 1856 and died just a year later, 29 June
1857.
In August 1858,
Woodford, Margaret and Florence returned from a trip to Europe that lasted
nearly a year. An article in the
Louisville Daily Courier dated 14 August 1858, says "We had the
pleasure, yesterday, of seeing in our sanctum, our friend and fellow-citizen W.
H. Dulaney, who has recently made the tour of Europe with his family. He has been absent nearly a year. The route he took through England, France,
Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium was familiar to us….”
Their next child, Woodford Hector Dulaney, Jr., was born a
few months after their return from Europe, on 29 November 1858.
Woodford operated a dry goods business before the Civil
War. After the death of his
father-in-law, Benjamin Cawthon, he managed the large estate that was left to
his wife. He was also active in banking
and real estate.
On 15 June 1860, Margaret Josephine Dulaney was born.
Robert Lee Dulaney was born 1 April 1865.
Elizabeth B. (“Lizzie”) Dulaney was born 11 November 1866.
Benjamin C. Dulaney was born 19 October 1869.
On 12 March 1870, a daughter, Mary Maud was born. She died 7 March 1872.
By 1872, the family was living in their large home at 720 W.
Broadway in Louisville (later the Welsworth Hotel). In 1864, Woodford purchased “Tuliphurst” in Peewee Valley,
Oldham Co., Kentucky, from Noble Butler. He extensively remodeled
the house and used it as a summer residence.
On 18 May 1873, their youngest child, May Dulaney was born.
Florence Dulaney married Albert Shelby Willis, U.S.
Congressman, on 20 November 1878 in Louisville.
On 27 September 1879, daughter, Margaret Josephine
died of typhoid fever. She was 17 years old.
The 1880 federal census lists the following people in
Woodford’s household: Dulaney, W H, 57, married, Retail merchant;
Dulaney, MJ, 48, wife, keeping house; Hecter, 21, son, Law Student; Benjamin, 17, son, at school; Robert, 13, son, at school; Lizzie, 13, daughter, at school; May, 8, daughter, at school; Willis, A[lbert] S[helby],
36, Boarder, Member of C[ongress] &
attny; Willis, Florence, 29, Boarder, married, at home. The household also had 3 servants.
On 6 July 1880,
Florence and Albert Willis had a son, Albert S. Willis, Jr. This was Woodford and Margaret’s first
grandchild.
In 1893, Woodford was involved in the Kentucky Commission to
the World’s Columbian Exposition.
On 6 January 1897, their son-in-law, Albert Willis, died
while serving as U.S. Minister to Hawaii.
The 1900 federal census lists Woodford’s household as
Woodford, Margaret, Woodford Jr., May, Florence Willis and her son, Albert S.
Willis Jr.
On 30 January 1901, Woodford’s wife, Margaret, died.
On 17 December 1902, Woodford died at his home in Louisville
after being ill for about a year. An extensive obituary was published in the
Louisville Courier Journal on 18 December 1902.
A copy of the obit can be found at the website about Tuliphurst.
Woodford, Margaret, and the other Dulaneys are buried at
Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. Here
is a link to Woodford’s Find-A-Grave memorial .
This link is to portraits of Woodford and Margaret found in the book Lessons in Likeness: Portrait Painters in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley by Estill Curtis Pennington.
Here are the descendants of Woodford and Margaret J. (Cawthon) Dulaney, as far as I currently know them. There seem to only be one or two lines where there might be living descendants.
