Sometime between about 1836 and 1840, Anna's parents moved the family to Madison Co., Illinois. Her father died there in 1841 and her mother died there in 1842. Anna was left an orphan at 16. On 9 August 1843, her brother-in-law, Benjamin Slater (husband of her sister Emily), was named guardian for her and her younger sister, Amanda.
Anna's brother, John William Duncan, was living in Woodford Co., Kentucky. By the 1850 census, Anna had joined him there and was living with his family.
On 17 October 1853, John William gave his permission as guardian for Ann Mariah Duncan to marry James Madison Campbell. Campbell posted bond in Mercer Co., Kentucky. The couple was married 20 October 1853, probably in Mercer Co. (though possibly in Woodford Co.).
James Madison Campbell was born in Virginia on 18 November 1817. I have not attempted to research his parents.
Woodford Co., Kentucky death records show an unnamed male child, son of J. M. Campbell, one day old, who died 25 May 1854. This was probably the first child of James and Anna.
Their first child to live was Thomas Porter Campbell, born in Woodford Co., Kentucky, on 18 December 1856.

Daughter, Emily Louisa Campbell, was born on 3 June 1860, also in Kentucky.
The 1860 census for Versailles, Woodford Co., Kentucky, shows the James M. Campbell household as: Jas M. Campbell, 40, farmer, born Virginia; Ann M. Campbell 24, born Pennsylvania; Thos P Campbell, 4; Jas M. Campbell, 2; Emily J. Campbell,1/12; Mary Ross, 10, all born Kentucky. I don't yet know who ten-year-old Mary Ross is or whether she is related.
On 21 December 1861, daughter, Anna McKee Campbell was born in Kentucky.
On 18 July 1863, son Duncan Campbell was born. He died 31 July 1863 when he was only 13 days old. Another son, Charles E. Campbell, was born 10 July 1865 and died 13 September 1865 at 2 months of age.
By 1870, James and Anna had moved their family to North Vernon in Jennings Co., Indiana. The census taken 2 August 1870, shows the household as: James Campbell, 52; Ann M Campbell, 42; Thomas Campbell, 14; James M. Campbell, 12; Emma Campbell, 10; Anna M. Campbell, 8.
Sometime in the next few years, James and Anna moved their family to California. Anna's older sister, Emily, and her husband, Benjamin Slater, were living in San Joaquin Co., California when they died (Emily in 1877 and Benjamin in 1878). Anna and James moved there, too. I find James on the voter register for 1879 in Elliott. I suspect they moved before sister Emily's death, but so far have not proved it.
The 1880 census shows the family as James M. Campbell, 64; Ann Maria Campbell, 54; Emily L. Campbell, 20; Anna W. Campbell, 18; Thomas P. Campbell, 23; James M. Campbell, 22.
On 14 November 1880, daughter Anna married Benjamin Allen Farmer at her parents' home in Elliott, San Joaquin Co., California.
On 19 May 1881, son, Thomas P. Campbell married Clara Coulson in Galt, Sacramento Co., California.
On 20 September 1882, daughter Emily Louisa married John Abraham Taylor in Stockton, San Joaquin Co., California.
On 28 February 1883, son, James Madison Campbell, Jr., married Mary Elizabeth Callaway in San Joaquin Co., California.

James Madison Campbell died 9 December 1898 in the county hospital, Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California. He was 81 years old. He was buried in Galt Cemetery, Sacramento Co., California. No tombstone has been found.
After her husband's death, Anna Maria seems to have moved to Los Angeles, perhaps to be closer to her sister, Amanda (Duncan) Tade, who lived there. She died at 2612 E. 1st St., Los Angeles, California on 7 January 1900. She was 73 years old.
She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.
