John William Duncan (1816-1878) and his wife, Apaleen Kerchival (1825-1893)

Nov. 8, 2016:  I've updated this bio with a few more bits of information.  Those items are in italics.

John William Duncan was born 21 July 1816 in either Somerset Co. or Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.  He was the son of James Duncan and Elizabeth McKee.  This birth date comes from a transcription of Bible records now in possession of the Vaught/Cass family.  I have not seen the originals.

We know John lived in the area of Berlin, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, until at least 11 June 1837 when he married Susan Ringler in the Pennsylvania Reformed Church in Berlin.  Again, this information comes from the Duncan Bible records.  I have not found an original marriage record.  John was 20 and Susan was 18.

Susan Ringler was born 2 April 1819 in Stoney Creek Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.  She was one of 15 children born to Jacob Ringler and his wife, Eva Geller.  Susan apparently died within a few years of the marriage and is probably buried in Ringler Cemetery in Somerset Co., but this is not confirmed.  Some records indicate that she died in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1844,  but again, I can't yet confirm this.   No children are known to have been born to John and Susan.

On the 1840 census for Madison Co., Illinois, a James Duncan family is found.  While it is not certain that this is the correct family, the ages fit.  We know John's parents and siblings were in Madison Co., Illinois later, so suspect this is indeed the correct family.  In addition, listed right next to James Duncan is John Duncan, who is the correct age for our John William.  In his household is just one female of a correct age to be his wife, Susan (Ringler) Duncan.

John's father, James Duncan, died in 1841 and his mother, Elizabeth (McKee) Duncan, died in 1842, both in Madison Co., Illinois.

By 1844, however, John Duncan was in Woodford Co., Kentucky.  He is shown on the 1844 Tax list for Woodford Co. as 1 male over 21 with 1 horse valued at $25.  The 1845 and 1846 tax records show him as 1 male over 21 with 1 horse valued at $50.  Susan (Ringler) Duncan does not seem to be with him, so she probably had indeed died before he went to Kentucky.

On 10 November 1846, John is mentioned as one of the heirs (along with his sisters Emily, Anne Marie, and Amanda) in the estate settlement for his mother's estate.

The 1847 Woodford Co., Kentucky tax records list John as 1 male over 21 with 1 horse valued at $35.  The 1848 records show him as a qualified voter and 1 male over 21 with 1 horse valued at $40.

We believe this is probably John William Duncan, but we have not been able to confirm it.
On 19 June 1848, the clerk of Woodford Co., Kentucky issued a marriage license for John W. Duncan and "Appelide" Kercheval.  On the same date, John W. Duncan took out a marriage bond for his marriage to "Appilene" Kerchival.  They were both from Woodford Co. and both "of age."  According to page 120 of the county marriage book, they were married on 20 June 1848 by the Rev. William Morton.  John was 31 and Appalene was 23.

Appaleen Kercheval (her name is found spelled many different ways) was born 13 January 1825 in Woodford Co., Kentucky, to George Kercheval and Martha (or perhaps Margaret) Cotter.  Her father is found on the 1840 census in Woodford County and the household members listed fits for this to be Appalene and her parents.

Appaleen (Kercheval) Duncan

John and Appaleen's first child, Agnes Duncan, was born 24 June 1849 in Woodford Co., Kentucky.

The 1850 census for Woodford Co. shows the family in District 1.  The household was John W. Duncan, 33, Mill wright, born PA; Apeline, 24, born KY; Agnes, 1, born KY; Ann M., 23, born PA.  Ann M. was John's sister, Ann Marie Duncan.

John is found on the 1851 Woodford Co. tax lists as a qualified voter and 1 male over 21 with 1 horse valued at $40.

On 4 March 1851, a son, Millard Duncan, was born at Oregon, Mercer Co., Kentucky.  His name may have been Millard Fillmore Duncan, but I haven't confirmed this.

On 17 October 1853, James M. Campbell posted bond  in Mercer Co., Kentucky, regarding his intention to marry Ann Maria Duncan.  John W. Duncan, as guardian of Ann, gave his permission for the marriage.  This was John's sister, Ann.

On 11 June 1854, twins were born to John and Appaleen:  a daughter, Appaleen Duncan, and a son, Elick Duncan.  I have found no further information on the daughter.

The 1856 tax lists for Mercer Co., Kentucky show John W., 1 male over 21, 5 children, 8 people in household, 3 hogs worth $11.

On 21 March 1858, daughter Mary Margaret was born in Oregon, Kentucky.

Son, Elick, died 5 April 1858 of scarlet fever.  Son, Millard, died on 7 April 1858 of scarlet fever.  They were buried in New Providence Presbyterian Cemetery in Mercer Co., Kentucky.

The 1859 and 1860 Mercer Co. tax lists show John Duncan there.  I have not found the family on the 1860 or 1870 censuses.

On 13 January 1861, their last child, Joseph Holt Duncan, was born near Danville, Boyle Co., Kentucky.  By 1861 when Joseph Holt was born, John and Apaleen and their children lived on a farm near the intersection of Casey, Boyle and Lincoln Counties, Kentucky.

From 1871 to 1874, John is found on the tax lists in Casey Co. and is listed as owning 75 acres.

On 31 October 1872, their oldest daughter, Agnes, married Milford Ellsworth Vaught in either Casey or Lincoln Co., Kentucky.  On 11 January 1877, in Kentucky, their daughter, Mary Margaret married George Harrison Cutter.

On 14 May 1878, John William Duncan died at Mildridgeville, Lincoln Co, Kentucky of "paralysis."  He was 61 years old.  I have not found his burial place.

Appaleen (Kercheval) Duncan
The 1880 census for Turnersville, Lincoln Co., Kentucky shows Milford Vaught and his wife, Agnes.  The household consisted of Milford, age 33 born KY; Agnes, wife, 33, born KY; Lena, daughter, age 6, born KY; Luis A., son, 4, born KY; Pearl, daughter, 2, born KY; and Aferton Duncan, female, 55, born KY and noted as 'boarder;' this is undoubtedly Agnes' mother, Apaleen.

On 16 November 1882, Joseph Holt Duncan married Lucy Bell Owens in Danville, Boyle Co., Kentucky.

About 1885, Appaleen moved with her daughter, Agnes, and son-in-law, Milford Vaught, to Greene Co., Missouri.  The family stayed there for about 2 years.  Then in about 1887, the Vaught family and Appaleen moved to Pratt Co., Kansas.

Appaleen (Kercheval) Duncan (taken sometime after the move to Kansas in 1887)

Appaleen died on 25 December 1893 at the home of her daughter, Agnes, near Coats, Pratt Co., Kansas.  She was 68 years old.  She was buried in Coats Cemetery.
