Margaret (called Peggy, too) was born to Joseph Braden and his wife, Sarah Wright, probably in the mid-1780s in Loudoun Co., Virginia. No primary documentation of her birth has yet been found.
On 6 February 1809, Margaret married Jozabed (found with various spellings) White, the son of Josiah White and Susan Lodge. Margaret's brother, John, posted bond and testified to the bride and groom's ages. The minister was John Mines.
Jozabed is found on the 1810 census for Loudoun Co. listed between Sarah Braden (his mother-in-law) and Robert Braden (his brother-in-law). There were only two people in the household, probably just Jozabed and Sarah.
Some researchers indicate that Peggy and Jozabed had a daughter, Margaret, but I have not found any reference to her in primary documents. Daughter, Sarah Anne, was born 17 April 1810. My information shows sons, Theodore Braden White, and John Randolph White, as both being born 9 November 1812. There are a number of documented twins in the extended Braden family, so it is possible that the birthdate is correct, but I have not yet confirmed this. I have found no other references to children other than these four.
On 22 June 1810, at the estate sale of the property of his father-in-law Joseph Braden, Jozabed purchased 1 auger, trought, & gouge, 1 hammer, 2 chisels & gouge, parcel plain stocks, 2 barrels, 1 pine table, 1 bucket & pig gin, 1 meal sifter, 1 table, 1 "Negro girl Mavis."
When Peggy's mother, Sarah (Wright) Braden, made her will in 1816, she made legacies to her grandchildren, Sarah Ann White, Theodore Braden White, and John Randolph White, as well as to her daughter, Margaret White.
On 27 March 1817, Josabed White and Robert Braden purchased the Waterford Mill and 3 lots in and adjoining the mill in Waterford from Emanuel and Catherine Newcomer for $15,000. Jozabed's occupation is mentioned elsewhere as being a mill wright.
In the 1817 will of Peggy's sister, Sarah (Braden) Lacey, Sarah directs her executor "to sell my two lotts in the new addition of Waterford for the best price that they will bring and invest the money... and pay the interest annually to my sister Margaret White during her natural life...." It also directs that the blacks named in her husband's will be taken and trained by her brother-in-law, Josibed White, until they are 21 and freed. Josibed White was named her executor. He received the balance of her estate "in consideration of his attention to me in my illness." The slaves in question were: Amos, Westly, Madison, Jefferson, Lige, Rena, and Rachel.
On 23 January 1819, Josibed White, Sarah Braden Lacey's executor, sold her Waterford lots for $300.
Josabed White is found on the 1820 census in Waterford, Loudoun Co., Virginia. He is listed near Robert Braden, his brother-in-law and partner in the mill.
On 9 December 1822, Margaret and Jozabed signed a deed selling a house and lot in Waterford to Jonathan Cost.
On 21 May 1823, George Henry bought a 103 acre farm from Jozabed and Margaret White for $3,600. This property adjoined Mary Fox, Matthew Beans, P. Cordell, and S. Gregg. Robert Braden and Samuel Hough, Jr. were the Justices of the Peace who recorded it. This is the last item I have found related to Margaret White.
As of 30 September 1823, George Henry owed Jozabed White $1,416.64, so Henry sold 103 acres of the farm adjoining Mary Fox, Matthew Beans, Presley Cordell, and Samuel Gregg (that he bought from White) to Zachariah Dulaney and Burr Braden. R. Braden and Samuel Hough were the Justices of the Peace recording the deed. Then on 12 July 1825, Burr Braden and Zachariah Dulaney published a notice in the Genius of Liberty, Leesburg, offering the 103 acres for sale "In pursuance of a deed of trust given to us by George W. Henry, for the benefit of Jozabed White, dated the 30th day of September, 1823, ...." The sale was to take place 13 August 1825. Then on 2 December 1826, George Henry sold for $1,000 the same 103 acres (that he purchased from Jozabed White) to Chas. G. Eskridge to settle the debt he had with John Gray. And then on 20 February 1827, Burr Braden and Zachariah Dulaney placed the following advertisement in The Genius of Liberty: "Trust Sale. -- Under the authority of a deed of trust, from George W. Henry to the undersigned, made originally for the benefit of Jozabed White, dated 30th September 1823, and recorded in the Clerk's office, of the county court of Loudoun, we shall, on the 24th day of February next and about the middle of the day, offer for sale at public auction, on the premises, to the highest bidder, for cash, the Tract of Land, In said deed of trust mentioned. It lies in the county of Loudoun, contains 103 acres, and adjoins the lands of Wm. Smith, Mary Fox, and others. The sale will be made to raise $341 with interest from the 21st day of June 1826 and the charges of this trust, for the benefit of the assignee of the Central Bank of Georgetown and Washington, and will take place on the premises. Zachariah Dulaney, Burr Braden, Jan. 16, 1827 - 2 ts Trustees. The above sale is postponed to the 24th of March at the same place. Feb. 20, 1827 - 7 ts" I'm not sure what was going on with that 103 acres, but it was sure up 'for sale' a lot.
Jozabed White apparently died 1 February 1828 in Loudoun Co., though I have not found a primary document to prove that. I have found nothing to give me a date of death for his wife, Margaret (Braden) White. No grave site has been found for either of them.
