Update To Jones Family Photo, August 1919

In March, I did a blog post about a the photo taken in August 1919 at a birthday party for John R. Jones, probably taken in Hankinson, North Dakota.

Ray Quisenberry, another researcher interested in this Jones family, also has a copy of this photo.  His copy is of a higher quality than mine, and he has been working to try and identify the people in the photo.

Ray and his mother, Jennie Ruth (Jones) Quisenberry Wilson, attended a Jones family reunion about 1991, and people at that reunion helped identify some of the individuals in the 1919 photo.  Here is the photo again.

Licher and Smith Family Photos, Part 2

A few days ago I wrote about some family photos that were loaned to me by my mother's cousin, a daughter of Josephine (Licher) Smith, sister to my grandmother, Georgia (Licher) Perry.

And I posted this wedding photo of an unidentified couple:

While scanning the other pictures, I found this one:

Do you think they are the same couple?

Eva and Arthur were the parents of Elmer Smith, who was Josephine (Licher) Smith's husband.

Letter from Albert Licher to his daughter, Josephine Smith, April 9, 1935

The following letter from Albert Licher to his daughter, Josephine (Licher) Smith, is currently in possession of Josephine's daughter, Bettie.  Bettie provided me with this copy.

Muncie, Ind.

April 9 – 1935

Josephine, Elmer and the children one and all..

We are all well and hope that you folks all have the best of health.  I thought I would send a few leaflets over as Elmer asked me some time ago about them it does not cost anything to send them to Fr. Coughlin and I think we must do something to help as long as we see nothing in the two old parties. 

John was over but he never had as much as a dime  I sure told him what I heard but he does not seem to think that he does wrong  I do not know what to think of him.  I do wish that I could make him let loose a little then I could help my loved ones when help is needed.  Well my girl come when you can   I only wish I had just some of John’s money, you would not have to worry, the mill does a little and Bill has some work but Ed and Charles have none    Warner Gear laid off 100’s men.  Let us hope for the best.  With best wishes from all at home I remain as ever Kirby Ave. Grandpa and I must not forget Grandma.

Notes:

Elmer was Elmer Smith, Josephine's husband.
Fr. Charles Coughlin was a radio personality during the 1930s.  Here is a link about him. 
John was probably Albert's brother, John Licher, who lived in Anderson, Indiana at this time.
Bill was Albert and Anna's son, William J. Licher, who lived with them after his divorce.
Ed was Edmund Licher, Albert and Anna's son, who was 28, not yet married, and living with them.
Charles was Charles Licher, son of William and grandson of Albert and Anna.  He also lived with his grandparents at this time.
Kirby Ave. was the street they lived on: 1413 Kirby Ave., Muncie, Indiana.

Aug. 14, 1933

Hello Josephine and all the family.

We wish you all the good luck in the world and hope all will be well in the end.

The children are here and feel right at home and we are all glad to have them with us.  I will say that we have plenty for all twenty and hope that God will let them all grow up and be good men and women.

Well Josephine, I am working and I do not want you to bother about my dues (?).  I will send them to Mr. Costello so do not pay them next Sunday.  We are all well and the children are fine and they can call 1413 their home.

I think Wednesday will be the starting of eight hours for me and I do not know how things will turn out.

From this letter, it seems to me that perhaps some of Josephine's children were staying with their grandparents, Albert and Anna Licher.  Josephine's youngest child was born 26 August 1933, so perhaps the older children went to stay with the grandparents for awhile at the end of Josephine's pregnancy.  Josephine and Elmer had 10 children at the time this letter was written.
