More on the Family of Robert Watt and his wife, Jane

Well, we can thank Tropical Storm Bonnie for this blog post.  Well, the storm and the holiday crowds.  I like my beaches mostly deserted, and they certainly are not deserted this weekend.

I don't have access to all my files right now, so this post may be a bit light on source material.

I thought I might share some of what I've learned about the descendants of Robert and Jane Watt.  I've done posts on Robert and Jane as well as their daughter, Laura Virginia Watt, who was my husband's ancestor.   While I have not done extensive research on the other children of Robert and Jane, I will post what I have.

Mary Jane Watt:   The only source I have for this first child of Robert and Jane Watt is the Memoirs of Charles Russ Richards.  He says she died as an infant but gives no dates or details.  While family information is a good secondary source, I would love to find something primary to confirm this child.

Susan T. Watt:  I have never seen any information that gives Susan's middle name.  She was born 19 January 1833 in Jefferson, Clinton Co., Indiana.  By July 1849, she was at school in Annapolis, Indiana.  A letter to her from her father, Robert, was addressed to the W. A. School, but I have not yet searched for the school.  Susan is on the 1850 census with her parents in Washington Twp., Clinton Co., Indiana.  Susan apparently worked as a school teacher before her marriage.

On 15 May 1853, Susan married Samuel Kennedy Richards in Lafayette, Indiana.  On 29 March 1854, their daughter, Clara Alice Richards, was born, apparently in Arkansas where the family was living due to Samuel's work.  This is another item for further research.

Their next child, Mary McClellan Richards, was born 10 October 1858 in Indiana.  The 1860 census shows Samuel Richards and family living in Clarks Hill, Laramie Twp., Tippecanoe Co., Indiana.  Three more children are known:  Clyde Watt Richards, born 31 March 1863 in Clarks Hill; Lura Jane Richards born 20 March 1866 in Clarks Hill; and Anna Richards, born July 1869 in Clarks Hill.

The 1870 census for Laramie Twp., Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, indicates that the Richards household consisted of: Samuel Richards, 44, born about 1826 in New York; Susan T. Richards, 38; Clara A. Richards, 15; Mary M. Richards, 11; Clide (sic) W. Richards, 7; Lura Richards, 3; Anna Richards, 11/12; and Rufus Clark, 24.

Daughter Anna seems to have died young; I have found very little about her to date.

Susan T. (Watt) Richards died 1 August 1879 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana.  She was buried in Springvale Cemetery, Lafayette, Indiana.

Susan's husband, Sam, and her children continued to live in Tippecanoe Co.  The 1880 census shows them in Lafayette, Indiana;  the household consisted of: S.K. Richards, born about 1826 in New York, aged 54, widowed, Civil Engineer, both parents born in New York; Clarra (sic) A. Richards, 26; Mary M. Richards, 21; Louisa Richards, 14; Clide (sic) W. Richards, 17.  Anna was not listed, so apparently died before 1880.

The 1900 census shows them in Laramie Twp. again.  The household consisted of Samuel K. Richards, 74, born Oct. 1825 in New York, widowed, parents born New York; Clyde W. Richards, 37; Laura J. Richards, 34; Clara A. Ward, 46.  Daughter, Mary, was in Terre Haute in 1900.

Samuel Kennedy Richards died in Clarks Hill, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana on 20 March 1905.  He was buried next to his wife, Susan, in Springvale Cemetery in Lafayette, Indiana.

Because we have many letters from the Richards sisters to their aunt, Laura (Watt) Braden, I have considerable information on them.  I will do a separate post about the children of Sam and Susan Richards.

James William Watt:  I have only begun to research this son of Robert and Jane.  He was born about 1836 in Clinton Co., Indiana, and appears with his parents on the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Clinton Co.  On 5 September 1869, he married Clara Davidson in Clinton Co. and they had the following known children:  Nellie, born 1869; Daisy Clemantine, born 1872; Cloud (a son) born 1873; and Jimmy R., born 1875.  Sometime after 1875, wife Clara died.  James remarried 10 September 1878 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana to Rachel Lewis.  The 1880 census shows the family in Clarks Hill, Indiana.  The household was: Watts, James W, m 45, married, farmer, born IN, father born Scotland, mother born PA; Rachel R., wife, 39, born OH; Nellie, 10, born IN; Daisy C, 9, born IN; Cloud, 7, m, born IN; Jimmy R., 5, born IN; Thorpe, Theodore, son, 6; McCabe, Margaret, 45, keeping house, "prisoner?"  From this, I infer that Rachel had been married before and had a son, Theodore Thorpe, but I have not followed this up.  James William Watt died sometime before 1885.  I have not searched for his grave or other information, so he is someone I need to do more work on.

That is enough for today.  Part 2 can be found HERE.
