For one thing, I found a copy of Peter's will in Lafayette in 1858. In it he lists the following children: Mary Virginia Jennings (still single in 1858); William Meredith, who had been adopted by Peter's friend, John L. Meredith; Henry F. Jennings; Francis B. Jennings; George Jennings; Arthur W. Jennings; and Alice Jennings.
Mary Virginia Jennings:
She seems to have gone mostly by her middle name, Virginia. I have not found an exact birth date for her,
but her mother did not mention her in her newsy letter of April 1835, so I
suspect Mary Virginia was born after that date.
The 1860 census gives her age as 24, which gives a birth date of about
1836. Calculating her birth date from
the age given on her tombstone, gives a birth date of about October 14, 1835. I suspect she was born in October 1835, but
have not yet found proof.
In August 1850, Mary Virginia was mentioned as one of the heirs of her grandmother, Deborah Jenners.
In January 1855, she was named in guardianship documents filed by her father, Peter.
She was named in her father’s will in January 1858 and was still single. He left her the household items that had belonged to her late mother, Ann.
Her father died 30 January 1858.
On 13 January 1859, she married Robert B. Carnahan in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. Robert was born January 11, 1835.
She and her husband, Robert, are found on the 1860 census
of Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana.
They are both listed as 24 years old.
Mary Virginia (Jennings) Carnahan died in Lafayette on 23
February 1861.
She was buried in Greenbush Cemetery. Her husband, Robert Carnahan, only survived her by 17 days; he died in Lafayette on 12 March 1861, of consumption. Given the prevalence of tuberculosis (consumption) in the Jennings family, I suspect that is also what killed Mary Virginia. I have found no children. Here is their tombstone (photo taken November 2015):

Henry F. Jennings.
Henry F. Jennings - I have not found his exact birth date. On the 1850 census he is listed as 11 years
old (so born ca 1839); on the 1860 census he is listed as 25 years old (so born
ca 1835). Other records suggest October
1839.
Henry is on the 1850 census in Lafayette with his father,
Peter, and step-mother, Jane.
On the 1860 census, he is shown as a 25 year-old clerk
living in a boarding house in Lafayette.
Henry enlisted in the Indiana 16th Light
Artillery Battery on 1 March 1862. He
was mustered out of the military on 26 September 1862.
He married Julia F. Roll in Marion Co., Indiana on 22
December 1863.
Julia was born 15 February 1846 in Indiana. Her parents were Isaac and Catherine Roll.
Henry and Julia’s daughter, Virginia Jennings, was born
in March 1877.
In 1880, he and Julia and their daughter, Virginia, were
living with Julia’s parents in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1900, the family was living in Oconomowoc,
Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Henry died on 13 May 1911 at the Civil War Veteran’s Home
in Stanislas, California. He was about
72 years old. He was buried in LosAngeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.
Julia died 30 November 1918 in Cook Co., Illinois; she was 72 years old. She is buried in LaBelle Cemetery,
Oconomowoc, Waukesah County, Wisconsin.
Their daughter, Virginia, married Albion L. Headburg before 1908 and had a daughter, Virginia, who married a John Yount and died in California in 1979. She apparently had children. So far, this is the only line in Ann and Peter's family that I have found a possibility of children who might still be living.
James Jennings.
James Jennings was born about September 1840. He died 2 October 1844 of “putrid sore throat”
when he was about 3 ½ years old. He was
buried first in Greenbush Cemetery, then moved in June 1880 to the Jennings
plot in Springvale Cemetery.
William Meredith Jennings AKA William Jennings Meredith
William Meredith Jennings was born 14 October 1843. He was only 5 months old when his mother,
Ann, died. In his father, Peter’s will
(written January 1858), William is mentioned as having been adopted by Peter’s
friend, John L. Meredith. I have not found exactly when John adopted William,
however he is not with the Peter Jennings family on the 1850 census. I found him on the 1860 census in Lafayette
with his adoptive parents. He changed
his name to William J. Meredith.
William married Louise A. Coles (1844-1905). They had a son, John Coles Meredith, born 28
September 1873. John Coles married a
lady named Minnie Stypp. He was the owner of a music store in Dayton, Ohio. I have not found any children for John and Minnie.
William Meredith died 4 November 1923 in Miami Co.,
Ohio. He and Louise are buried in
Riverside Cemetery, Troy, Miami Co., Ohio.
Francis B. Jennings
Francis B. Jennings or Frank was born about 1849. He was the son of Peter and his second wife,
Jane Brooke. May have married Mary Wooley
14 January 1869, but I have not been able to find anything about her. Was on the 1860 census in Connecticut with
his step-mother, Sarah (Peter’s third wife).
Was on the 1870 census in Lafayette, Indiana, with Sarah again. Died 19 May 1925 in Dayton, Ohio and is
buried in Springvale Cemetery. I have not yet found any confirmation as to Mary Wooley or any children.
George Jennings.
George Jennings was another son of Peter and his second
wife, Jane. His middle initial was probably either "L" or "S." He married Anna D. Evans on
17 April 1879. She died giving birth to
twins who also died in April 1881. Anna and the children are buried in the family plot in Springvale Cemetery. I have not found what happened to George as
yet. He does not seem to be buried in Springvale with the rest of the family. I'll need to continue my research into George.
Arthur W. Jennings
Arthur W. Jennings was another son of Peter and his
second wife, Jane. He was born 17 May
1855 in Lafayette. He apparently never
married. He died of consumption 3 May
1880 in Lafayette and is buried in the family plot in Springvale Cemetery. No children.
Alice Louise Jennings.
Alice Louise Jennings was the only child born to Peter
and his third wife, Sarah Comstock. She
was born about March 1857 and died 10 May 1858, aged 1 year and 2 months. She is buried in Springvale Cemetery.
I will continue to research these children to try and
fill in the blanks and will update this when new information is found.
