William
Jackson Perry is one of our “brick wall” ancestors – the place where all the
Perry researchers are stuck. So far, I’ve
come across no Perry researcher who has discovered William’s parents. Our information on him is sketchy, at best. But one of the benefits of writing a blog
post is that it helps me to see places where I might look for additional
information.
William
Jackson Perry was probably born about 1791 in Kentucky, perhaps in Franklin
Co., but I’ve found no primary documents regarding his birth.
On 25
February 1817, William entered a marriage bond with John Young, father of his
intended bride, Catherine Young. He
signed with his mark, so he apparently could not write.
They were
married 28 February 1817.

Catherine
Young was probably born about 1790 in Kentucky.
Her parents were John Young and Catherine (maiden name unknown). All the information that I have on John and
Catherine Young is that John was born about 1772 and died about 1820 (probably
in Kentucky) and Catherine was born about 1772 and died about 1832. So far, this line is also a “brick wall.”
The first
child born to William Jackson Perry and his wife, Catherine (Young) Perry, was
John Young Perry, born 29 December 1817 in Anderson Co., Kentucky.
About
1819, a daughter, Sarah Ann Perry, was born.
Daughter,
Elizabeth Perry, was born about 1822.
About 1825,
son Rory Perry was born.
Son, Berry
Perry, was born 7 June 1826.
Daughter,
Mary Ann Perry, was born 27 November 1827.
William
Perry is found on the 1830 census in Anderson Co., Kentucky. The household shows the following family
members: William Perry; 2 males under 5;
1 male 5-10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 30-40; 1 female under 5; 1 female 5-10; 1
female 10-15; 1 female 30-40.
George W.
Perry was born in 1830 in Anderson Co.
Christopher
Perry was born 25 December 1832 in Anderson Co.
The 1840
census for Anderson Co., Kentucky shows the household was shown as: Perry,
William: 1 Male 5-10; 2 Males 10-15; 1
Male 15-20; 1 Male 20-30; 1 Male 40-50.
1 Female 10-15; 1 Female 15-20; 1 Female 20-30; 1 Female 50-60.
On 24
November 1841, John Young Perry married Lydia Frances Herndon in Anderson Co.,
Kentucky. The couple had 11 children and
spent their lives in Anderson Co., Kentucky.
Lydia (Herndon) Perry died before 1861.
John then remarried to Louisa Peters on 3 September 1861. John and
Louisa had 4 children. John Young Perry
died 14 October 1880.
On 12
December 1842, Elizabeth Perry married Alfred Gowen in Anderson Co.,
Kentucky. They had 2 daughters that we
know of. I do not have death
information on them.
On 22 July
1846, Sarah Ann Perry married John Gordon in Anderson Co., Kentucky. They had 7 children. I do not have death information for Sarah or
Gordon.
On 17
December 1846, William Perry (born 1824) married Sarah Paine Crook in Anderson
Co., Kentucky. They had 6 children. William and Sarah are my ancestors, so I
will do another post on them with more detail.

Perry married Mary Searcy 29 July 1849.
The William Perry family
appeared on page 498 (Salt River) of the 1850 census for Anderson Co.,
Kentucky, and listed the following individuals:

On 25 May 1852, their son,
George W. Perry, died of typhoid fever.
William Perry’s house was on Big Willow Creek in Anderson
County, and he was a member of the Friendship Church which met in his home on February
15, 1854. He apparently owned about 800
acres of land in Anderson Co.
Mary Ann Perry married Isaac Cranfield on 25 December
1855 in Anderson Co., Kentucky. Mary Ann
and Isaac had 6 children. Mary Ann died
14 April 1882 in Anderson Co., Kentucky.
Isaac died 12 January 1903.
Christopher Perry married Frances Lucas on 12 December
1859. They had 9 children. Christopher died 25 May 1916 in Vernon Co.,
Missouri. Frances died 28 November 1910
in Vernon Co., Missouri.
The 1860 census shows William and Catherine still in
Anderson Co. Their son, Christopher, and
his wife, Frances, are living with them.
In addition, the family of Benjamin and Margaret Foreman was part of the
household, as was the family of William and Agnes Peters. William and Agnes were the parents of John
Young Perry’s second wife, Louisa.
William wrote his will on 28
March 1866. It was probated on 21 August
1871. So William must have died between
March 1866 and August 1871. No primary
death record has yet been found. His
will reads as follows: "Will of
William Perry Dated March 28, 1866.
I Wm Perry of Anderson County and State of
Kentucky being of sound mind do make this my last will and testament. I have given to all of my children all of my
estate I ever intend them to have except my son Christopher Perry. I will and bequeath at my death all my
property both real and personal to him given under my hand this 28th of March
