Woodford Hector Dulaney, Jr., 1858-1903

Life continues to be hectic and I find myself ping-ponging all over the place when I have a few minutes to do genealogy.  It is hard to focus right now, so I thought I'd write a blog post, since that will make me feel like I've done something on genealogy.

I chose Woodford Hector Dulaney, Jr. because one of my diversions this week has been reviewing what I know about the Louisville Dulaney family.  In the past, I've done posts on his father, Woodford H. Dulaney, Sr. and his sister, Florence Braden Dulaney Willis.  Time to continue on that family, I think.

As an aside, I still have not located the pictures that Florence loaned to the Speed Museum in 1929.  I am still VERY interested in tracking them down, so if anyone discovers any clues, please let me know.  I tried tracing Florence's descendants, but it looks to me like she has none that are living.  Impossible to guess what might have happened to the pictures.  I've checked with the logical libraries and museums around the Louisville area without success.  I am open to additional suggestions.

Woodford Hector Dulaney, Jr. was born 29 November 1858 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky.  He was the son of Woodford H. Dulaney, Sr. and his wife, Margaret Josephine Cawthon.

The 1880 census shows Woodford Jr. living with his parents in Louisville.  He is listed as a law student.

Woodford Jr. was a lawyer who earned his law degree in 1882 from the University of Louisville.

On 2 June 1887, he married Caroline B. Fulton in Louisville.  Carrie was born on 23 June 1863 to Edward Fulton and his wife, Caroline Wilson.

On 19 July 1888, their daughter, Henrietta Wilson Dulaney, was born.

He is found on various Louisville City Directories as a lawyer.  I found him on the 1900 census living with his parents, but no listing for his wife and daughter.

On 30 January 1901, his mother died.  And on 17 December 1902, his father died.  Woodford Jr. is listed as an heir in his father's will.  This Louisville map shows the location of the property left to the Dulaney children after their parents' deaths:

On 20 May 1903, Woodford Hector Dulaney, Jr. died of asthma at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville.  He was 44 years old.

The following story appeared in the Louisville Courier-Journal on 22 May 1903:

"MR. DULANEY'S FUNERAL THIS MORNING. - Will Be Conducted From the Chapel At Cave Hill Cemetery. - The funeral of Mr. W. Hector Dulaney will take place at 12 o'clock this morning from the chapel of Cave Hill cemetery.  The services will be conducted by the Rev. Reverdy Estill.
Mr. Dulaney died at the Galt House Wednesday afternoon after an illness of several weeks.  He had become too ill to be removed to the family residence at Pewee Valley.  Mr. Dulaney was a member of the Louisville bar.  He was a son of the late W.H. Dulaney, who was one of the city's wealthiest business men.  Ill-health forced Mr. Dulaney to retire from active law practice five years ago.  Mr. Dulaney is survived by his wife and daughter, Miss Henrietta Dulaney.  He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Albert S. Willis, Mrs. J. C. Clements and Miss May Dulaney.  Mrs. Clements arrived yesterday morning from Washington to attend the funeral.
The pallbearers who will officiate are as follows: Messrs. W. L. Halsey, E.B. Mulene, Obern Thomas, George P. Kendrick, Alex Craig, Edward Dulaney and Charles M. Lindsey."

He was buried in the family plot in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.

Woodford's widow, Carrie, remarried on 31 October 1905 to John Tevis.  She continued to live in the Louisville area for the rest of her life.  She died 26 February 1957 and is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery.

Woodford and Carrie's only child, Henrietta, married Allen Payne Harvey on 25 June 1913 in Louisville.  The couple had two known children:  Caroline F. Harvey, 1915-2004, and Allen Harvey, Jr., 1917-1967.  Henrietta died 27 March 1959 in Louisville and is also buried in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Caroline Harvey does not appear to have married or had children.  Allen Jr. did have at least one son, Allen Payne Harvey, III who died in 1997.

I have no pictures of any of these individuals and would love to find some.
