In the Hagerstown Exponent (Hagerstown, Indiana) for Thursday, 14 March 1901, I found a notice of the funeral of Nancy (Replogle) Stauble that read: "Rev. Abram Bowman preached the funeral of Mrs. Frank Stauble at Buck Creek, Friday."
From the newspapers, I am now confident that it was indeed, this Franz J. Stauble who married Mrs. Eliza Grubb in Muncie, Indiana in 1902. I found this notice on page 4 of The Star Press (Muncie, Indiana) for Monday, 12 May 1902:
"Stauble-Grubb. Franz J. Stauble and Mrs. Eliza Grubb were united in marriage at the bride's home in West Powers street Sunday at 5 o'clock. The wedding ceremony was performed by Elder George L. Studebaker in the presence of a few invited guests. Mr. and Mrs. Stauble will make their home in Muncie."
Then I found on page 4 of the Star Press for Wednesday, 20 May 1903 the following:
"NOW A CITIZEN OF THIS COUNTRY - After a residence of forty-five years in the United States, Franz J. Stauble, 64 years of age, formerly a citizen of the republic of Switzerland, was yesterday naturalized and is now a loyal supporter of the stars and stripes. Mr. Stauble sailed from Havre, France, for America in December, 1858. Until about a year ago he resided on a farm near Blountsville, in Henry county. he has since lived in Muncie. In 1872 he took the oath of allegiance to the United States. That gave him all the privileges of citizenship, but Mr. Stauble has decided that he wants to make a visit to his native land. In order to get the proper passport he learned from the state department that he must be a naturalized citizen. Charles Bender and Charles Prutzman served as witnesses for Mr. Stauble."
And then, I found this item dated 8 days after the above: Thursday, 28 May 1903 on page 10 of the Star Press:
Here is the text:
"SEXAGENARIANS GO TO DIVORCE COURT - But They Lived Together Less Than A Year, Wife Says. -- A suit for divorce was filed yesterday by Mrs. Eliza a. Stauble, 62, against Franz J. Stauble, 62. Mr. and Mrs. Stauble, who now desire to go separate ways, though advanced in years, were married in May, 1902, and separated last April 15.
The defendant is a native of Switzerland, who came to America in 1855, but took out naturalization papers only last week. He formerly lived near Blountsville, in Henry county, but moved to Muncie about a year ago. He is arranging to go back to his native country for a visit during the coming summer.
Mrs. Stauble charges her husband with continually scheming to get her property, with failure to provide, and with cruel treatment. She alleges that since their marriage one year ago, he has laid many plans to get her property and that he desires to have her out of the way. She says that he has cursed her because she would not let him collect her rents. She futher avers that she is now in feeble health, but has had to support herself from her own means, although her husband is amply able to do so. Mr. and Mrs. Stauble have resided on West Powers street."
So, my earlier question as to whether it was indeed the Franz Stauble who had been married to Nancy Replogle who then later married Eliza Grubbs, has now been answered. Yes, it was. (I love it when a mystery gets solved!)
I also found the following items related to Franz's death in October 1919:
