Agnes Duncan (1849-1937) and her husband, Milford Vaught

Agnes Duncan was born 24 June 1849 in Woodford Co., Kentucky to John William Duncan and his second wife, Appaleen Kerchival.

Agnes Duncan
Agnes is found with her parents on the 1850 census for District 1, Woodford Co., Kentucky.  The household was:  John W. Duncan, 33, Mill wright, born PA; Apeline, 24, born KY; Agnes, 1, born KY; Ann M., 23, born PA.   The Ann M. Duncan on the census was Agnes' aunt, her father's youngest sister.

I have not yet found Agnes or her family on the 1860 or 1870 census, but suspect they were in Kentucky.  We know that on 31 October 1872, Agnes married Milford Ellsworth Vaught in Lincoln Co., Kentucky.

Milford and Agnes (Duncan) Vaught
Milford Vaught was the son of Joseph Vaught and his wife, Kate Yeats.  He was born 15 August 1846 in Pulaski Co., Kentucky.

Agnes and Milford had the following children:

daughter Lena, born 4 August 1874 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky;
son Arthur Lewis, born 22 February 1876 in Kentucky;
daughter Pearle Louise, born 4 August 1878 in Lexington, Lincoln Co., Kentucky;
son Joseph Cash and a twin son who died at birth, born 23 February 1882 in Kentucky;
son Lucien Brown, born 17 April 1884 in Kentucky;
son Virgil Duncan, born 23 January 1887 in Missouri.

The 1880 census (taken 1 June 1880) shows Agnes and Milford in Turnersville, Lincoln Co., Kentucky.  The household consisted of Milford, age 33 born KY; Agnes, wife, 33, born KY; Lena, daughter, age 6, born KY; Luis A., son, 4, born KY; Pearl, daughter, 2, born KY; and Aferton Duncan, female, 55, born KY and noted as 'boarder;' this is undoubtedly Agnes's mother, Apaleen (Kerchival) Duncan.

Sometime about 1886, Milford and Agnes moved their family to Greene Co., Missouri.  It was there that their youngest child, Virgil Duncan Vaught, was born.  They did not stay in Missouri long, because by February 1887 they were in Pratt Co., Kansas.

The 1900 census (taken in June) shows the family in Grant Township, Pratt Co., Kansas.  The household consisted of Elliot (sic) Vaught, born Aug 1846, married 27 years, farmer, born KY (this is Milford); Agnes, wife, born June 1849, married 27 years, born KY, had 7 children with 6 living; Lena, born Aug 1874 in KY, school teacher; Arthur, born Feb 1876 in KY, school teacher; Pearl, born Aug 1878 in KY, school teacher; Joseph, born Feb 1882 in KY, farm laborer; Lucien, born April 1884 in KY, farm laborer; Virgil, born Feb 1887 in Missouri, at school.

Milford Vaught Family

The following sketch of Milford Vaught is found in "A Biographical History of Central Kansas" Vol. 2 (published 1902):

 MILFORD E. VAUGHT.
A busy, active and useful career has been that of the subject of this sketch, who is one of the well know and representative farmers of Grant township, Pratt county.  His close attention to agricultural pursuits has brought to him a handsome competence and his pleasant home, with its attractive surroundings, is a visible evidence of what he has accomplished, while is residence in this county has extended over a period of a decade and a half.  His residence is located on section 11 of the township mentioned, and is two miles from the village of Coats, which is his post office address.  His life has been one of conscientious sincerity and unbending integrity, and thus he has ever held as his own the confidence and respect of those with whom he has been thrown in contact in business and social relations.
     Mr. Vaught is a native of the state of Kentucky, having been born in Pulaski county, on the 15th of August 1846, the son of Joseph Vaught, who likewise was born in that county, in 1818, being a son of John Vaught, who was born in Virginia of German ancestry.  The last mentioned married a Miss Huff and they removed to Pulaski county, Kentucky, being numbered among the early settlers in that section, and there both of them passed the remainder of their lives, both attaining advanced age.  Joseph Vaught, the father of our subject was reared on the old homestead farm in Pulaski county and upon attaining maturity he was united in marriage to Miss Katie Yates, who was born in Kentucky, the daughter of John Yates, who was born in Kentucky, of Irish lineage, and that state also figured as the place of his wife's birth, her maiden name having been Hughes.  They lived to good old age and both passed their entire lives in Kentucky.  Joseph Vaught continued to devote his attention to agricultural pursuits until his death, at the age of seventy-four, and he ever maintained his home in the state in which he was born.  He was a man of sterling worth of character and was a consistent member of the Christian church.  His first wife died when her son Milford, the subject of this sketch, was but two years of age, and Mr. Vaught subsequently took unto himself a second wife, in the person of Miss Hala Phelps, who was a native of Kentucky and who survived him by several years.  Of the three children of the first marriage our subject is the only survivor, the other two having been Greenup, who served as a soldier in the Confederate army during four years of the Civil war, having been with Morgan on his celebrated raid through Ohio and Indiana and having been captured and held a prisoner at Camp Douglas for eighteen months, and after the war he located in Mississippi, where his death occurred; and James, who was a member of the Twelfth Kentucky Federal Infantry, was killed in the battle of Franklin.  Of the nine children of the second marriage six survive and they all reside in Kentucky, namely: Talbert, Harvey, Perkins, Roscoe, Sherman and Saulda.  The three deceased are Fontaine, Elmeda and Polly.
    Milford E. Vaught, to whom this sketch is dedicated, was reared on the paternal farmstead in Kentucky and received a common-school education.  At the age of twenty-six years, in Casey county, that state, he was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Duncan, their union being solemnized on the 31st of October, 1872.  She was born in Woodford county, Kentucky, a daughter of John and Apaline (Kerchevell) Duncan, the former of whom was born in Pennsylvania in 1816, having been of Scotch lineage, while his wife was born in Kentucky, in 1825.  John Duncan and his wife resided for a time in Woodford county, removing thence to Mercer county and finally taking up their residence in Casey county, where he died at the age of sixty years, having been a millwright by trade and having followed this as a vocation during his entire business career.  His wife died in 1894, at the age of sixty-four, having been at the time in the home of our subject.  She was a zealous and faithful member of the Christian church, as was also her husband, and his political allegiance was given to the Republican party.  Their three surviving children are Agnes, wife of our subject; Margaret, wife of George Cutter, a farmer of Center township, Pratt county, Kansas; and Joseph, a resident of Indiana.
   After his marriage Mr. Vaught continued to be identified with agricultural pursuits in Kentucky until 1885, when he removed to Greene county, Missouri, where he farmed for two years, at the expiration of which period he started for Pratt county, Kansas, making the trip overland with team and wagon.  In his previous operations he had been fairly successful and thus he was well fortified for carrying forward his new farming enterprise upon his arrival in this country.  He forthwith effected the purchase of his present homestead farm, of one hundred and sixty acres, buying the property of Lewis Rector, who had made slight improvements, having broken only eighteen acres of the land.  Mr. Vaught's first dwelling here was a small, two room house, and to this he has since added until he now has a comfortable and attractive farm residence, equipped with modern improvements and furnished in excellent taste.  To the original homestead he had added by the purchase of an adjoining tract of equal area, so that he is now the owner of a well improved farm of three hundred and twenty acres, all being well fenced and one hundred and seventy acres being under a high state of cultivation.  The other improvements about the farm indicate the care and progressive spirit of the owner.  Mr. Vaught also leases other land in the locality and raises wheat upon an extensive scale, having three hundred acres devoted to this product in the present season (1902) and eighty-five acres being devoted to other crops, while on his place are to be found an excellent grade of horses and cattle.  In his political allegiance Mr. Vaught has long been arrayed with the Republican party, but since coming to Kansas he has occasionally exercised his franchise in support of the People's party, more particularly in matters of local issue.  During eight years of the period of his residence in Pratt county he has been a member of the school board of his district, and both he and his estimable wife hold membership in the Methodist Episcopal church, both being held in high esteem in the best social circles of the community.
    In conclusion we enter a brief record concerning the children of Mr. and Mrs. Vaught.  They are young people of exceptional mentality and attractive personality, and their popularity has come as a natural sequence.  The three eldest have attained excellent reputation as teachers in the public schools, and each of them has taken up a claim of land in Meade county, southeast of West Plains.  The children are here named in order of their birth:  Lena, who has been a popular teacher in the schools of Pratt and Kiowa counties for the past four years, passes a portion of her time on her claim, in Meade county, and when not thus placed and when her presence is not demanded elsewhere in connection with her pedagogic work, she remains at the parental home.  Arthur, who completed his educational discipline at Great Bend and Nickerson, was formerly a successful teacher in Pratt county, and now resides in Meade county.  On the 31st of August, 1901, in Pratt county, he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Pinger, who was born in Douglas county, this state, her parents having been natives of Germany and being now honored citizens of Wabaunsee county, where her father is a prosperous farmer.  The third child is Pearl, who was educated at Great Bend and who is now enjoying an excellent reputation as one of the efficient teachers of this county.  Joseph is a member of the class of 1902 in the college at Nickerson, where he is completing a special course in science and theology.  Lucien and Virgil remain at the parental home.

The 1910 census shows Milford and Agnes in the same place with only their son, Lucien living with them.

On the 1920 census, Milford and Agnes were listed next door to their son, Lucian, and his wife (Mary Elizabeth Murphy) and son (Loren Milford Vaught).
