I get frustrated sometimes because of the lines that are brick walls. I also get frustrated because there are so many other lines that need a lot more work and I just can't seem to get around to doing the research.
My husband's ancestors, Emsley Hough and Belinda Kimberlin are an example of where a lot more work needs to be done to fill out their biographies. But I also know that if I wait until I am "finished" with research before I write a bio, I'd never post anything at all. I don't think I'll ever be finished with my research on anyone. So here is what I know about Emsley and Belinda:
Emsley Hough was born about 9 May 1812 in Indiana. His parents were John Hough and Nancy Ridge. On 17 October 1833, he married 16-year-old Belinda Kimberlin in Scott Co., Indiana. The marriage license reads, "Marriage Lices [sic] this day issued to Emsley Hogh and Belinda Kimberlin Oct 15th 1833 and married on 17 Oct 1833 by Hiram Starke."
Belinda Kimberlin was born 17 November 1816 in Scott Co., Indiana, to Daniel David Kimberlin and his wife, Ursula Brinton.
The first of their ten children was William A. Hough, born in Scott Co., Indiana on 10 April 1835. Their other children were: Hannah, born 6 February 1836; John, born about 1838; Milton Thomas, born 6 February 1840; Sarah Jane, born about 1842; Julia Ann, born about 1844; Nancy Elizabeth, born 27 May 1846; Daniel T., born about 1851; Mahala, born about 1853; and Frank (Francis) M., born 1858. All the children were born in Scott Co., Indiana.
On 9 May 1836, Emsley Hough petitioned the Scott Co., Indiana, court for a partition of land in Clark's Grant #278 that was conveyed to him by Mary Ann Dewit, widow of John Dewit, who died intestate and without issue.
A Scott Co., Indiana, road district document dated 1838 and found in Carl Bogardus' original files at the Scott Co. Library, lists Emsley in the same district as Daniel, Jacob, Isaac and Washington Kimberlin.
In May 1839, he was listed on Road District No. 4 as owning 125 acres in Clarks Grant #278.
He is found on the 1840 census for Scott Co., Indiana. Emsley was a trustee of Bethel Christian Church Cemetery, Lexington Twp., Scott Co., IN; this cemetery was also known as "Split Stump" Cemetery.
The 1850 census (taken 27 August 1850) shows Emsley and Belinda with their family in Lexington Township, Scott Co., Indiana. The household was listed next to the families of Daniel Kimberlin and Milton Kimberlin. The household consisted of: Emsley Hough, 39, M, farmer; Melinda, 33, f, can't read/write; William A., 15, m; Hannah, 13, f; John, 12, m; Milton, 9, m; Sarah Jane, 8, f; Julia Ann, 6, f; Nancy E, 4, f; all born in Indiana.
The 1860 census (taken 14 June 1860) shows the family in the same place. The household consisted of: Emsley Hough, 47, Farmer, born Tenn; Belinda, 43, born IN; Milton T, 20, born IN; Sarah J, 17, born IN; Julia A, 15, born IN; Nancy E., 13, born IN; Daniel T, 9, born IN; Mahala, 7, born IN; Francis M. 2, m, born IN.
The 1870 census (taken 29 July 1870) lists the family in Washington Township, Clark Co., Indiana. The household was: Emsley Hough, 58, farmer; Belinda, 53, keeps house; Julia A., 24; Francis M., 12; Flora, 6. I am not sure who Flora Hough is. This is a place for some research. She might be a daughter, of course, but I suspect she is a granddaughter.
Emsley Hough died 25 August 1875 in Scott Co., Indiana. He was 63 years old. He was buried in the John Kimberlin Cemetery, Nabb, Scott Co., Indiana.
After Emsley's death, Belinda seems to have gone to Illinois with some of her children. In 1900, I find her on the census in Platt Co., Illinois with her son, Francis, and his family. Also with them is her daughter, Julia. More research is needed to fill out her story after Emsley's death.
Belinda (Kimberlin) Hough died in 1912 in Illinois. She was 96 years old. She was buried in Bement Cemetery, Piatt Co., Illinois.
