The first one is dated 1 December 1913 and is from G. H. Bush, a local dentist. I wrote a little about Dr. Bush HERE. John S. seems to have done odd jobs for him while he was in college.
The message reads: "Will you please call at the office the first time you are down town? G. H. Bush."
The next postcard shows a picture of North Main Street, Langdon, N.D. and is from John's father, John R. Jones. It is postmarked Dec. 13, 1913.
The message is hard to read, but seems to be as follows: "12-12-13 Dear Son:- We drove in hear from Hanna when we stopped at the happy home of Mr & Mrs A Pryor - or Elsie - J R Jones Jr's daughter. As soon as I look over my farm east of town and collect 45.00 from A B (unreadable), we will pull out for Collier (unreadable) member house, now Walker (unreadable). Then we go to Kitson Co. Minn to look over Margaret's land 600 acres a good investment I am told by many. We will soon (unreadable) for Fargo then home. With lots of love from your father John." I welcome anyone's help in deciphering the 'unreadable' words.
The following information comes from Ray Quisenberry, another Jones researcher:
"I assume that John R. Jones Jr is John R "Milwaukee Johnnie" Jones Jr, 1862–1936
Birth Dec 1862 • Milwaukee County, Wisconsin
Death 24 APR 1936 • Breckenridge, Wilkin, Minnesota.
John
R. Jones Jr was a “double cousin” of John R. Jones, through Ann Jones,
grandmother of John S. Jones and through Elizabeth Roberts, sister of
Harriet Roberts.
He is not really a “Jr” – his father was a David J. Jones (not the same person as John R. Jones’ brother).
I am a little confused about his daughter Elsie, Mrs. A. Pryor.
I have two daughters for John R. Jones Jr:
Jessie Anne Jones, 1886-1981, m. Alfred E. Prior - they lived in Linden, Cavalier County, ND in 1920.
Elsie Harriet Jones, 1889-1981, m. Arthur G. Campeau – they lived in Olga, Cavalier County, ND in 1910
Concerning the daughter, either my information is incorrect, or John R. Jones was confused between the two daughters." Thanks for that information, Ray. Looks like we have a little puzzle to sort out.Just for fun, I looked up Langdon, N. D. and found a picture of the business district dated 2009, that looks to be a very similar shot to the one on the postcard. You can see the church steeple in both pictures.
The third postcard is from Genevieve in Bismark, North Dakota. I have discussed who Genevieve might be HERE.
The message reads: "Dear John: How does school go these days? Where will you be Xmas time? Are you coming home? One more week of school for me. Did you receive the "Bis T" I sent you some time ago? We had a fine visit with your father. Please answer these questions soon as possible, Genevieve 1002 Ave C."
The final postcard for today is addressed to "Mr. John S. Jones. Hankinson, N.D." and postmarked Dec. 30, 1913. There is no return address & the postmark is hard to read by seems to say Plymouth, Wisconsin. It is addressed to John S. Jones in Hankinson, N.D. The message reads: "Hello there John. Happy New Year. Delmer D Wensink"
I found a Delmar Wensink on the 1900 census for Plymouth, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin. And a little more research finds Delmar David Wensink, born June 3, 1893 in Thompson, North Dakota. I suspect this is the sender of the postcard. A little more digging and I found that Delmar was a student at Ripon College and was a senior in 1917, so I suspect he was a classmate of John S.
