Franz Josef Stauble Family

Franz Josef Stauble was born 25 March 1841 in Switzerland and came to the United States at age 17 in October 1858 on the ship Mercury that sailed from Havre.  On 23 April 1863, he married Nancy Replogle in Cambridge City, Indiana.

Nancy was born 25 February 1842 in Hagerstown, Wayne Co., Indiana.  Her parents were David Brown Replogle and Nancy Ann Hoover.

Their first child, daughter Mary Etta, was born 15 February 1864 in Cambridge City.

By 1865, Franz and Nancy had moved to Topeka, Kansas, where they stayed for about ten years.  Shortly after arriving in Kansas, on 27 August 1865, their daughter, Mary Etta died.  She was about 18 months old.

While in Kansas, they had the following children:

Sarah Ellen, born 25 April 1866;
Charles Edward, born 26 April 1868;
Cora Alice, born 9 January 1870;
Susan Emma, born 2 January 1872;
and unnamed male and female twins who were stillborn on 17 May 1874.

After the death of the twins, they returned to Cambridge City, Indiana.

On 13 November 1875, daughter Catherine Armeda was born.

By 1878, Franz and Nancy had moved their family to a farm in Stoney Creek Township, Henry Co., Indiana.  It was there that two more children died within a few days of each other:  Susan Emma on 9 February 1878 (aged 6 years) and Cora Alice on 18 February 1878 (aged 8 years).

On 20 February 1879, a son, William Henry, was born.
On 15 November 1882, daughter, Gertrude May was born.

On 5 June 1885, daughter Maude was born.

I estimate that the above picture was taken about 1888 based on the fact that the youngest daughter, Maude, appears to be about 3 years old.  While there is no identification on the picture, I believe the people shown are (left to right): In back standing:  Sarah Ellen, Charles Edward, Catherine; seated in front: Franz, William Henry, Gertrude May, Nancy, and Maude.

The above is a picture of two of the Stauble children, but I am not sure which ones.

On 6 March 1901, Nancy (Replogle) Stauble died.  She was 43 years old.  She was buried in Buck Creek Cemetery, Henry Co., Indiana.

I have reason to suspect that after Nancy's death, Franz moved into a Muncie, Indiana boarding house.  On 11 May 1902, a Franz J. Stauble married Eliza Ann (Scott) Grubb, a widow who ran a boarding house at 1205 Powers Street, Muncie. The license was issued 10 May 1902.  The marriage was performed 11 May 1902.  While I have not confirmed this is the correct Franz J. Stauble, I suspect it is. (See update link below; this is now confirmed.)   The 1903 city directory for Muncie shows Franz J. Stauble and wife, Eliza, at 1205 Powers.

On 19 May 1903, Franz obtained his naturalization in the Delaware County Circuit Court in Muncie.  On 28 May 1903, Franz was issued a passport.  By June 1903, he was in Switzerland visiting his sisters and family members.  I wonder if the marriage to Eliza was just to help him get naturalized and obtain a passport.  

After Franz returned to the United States aboard the Kroonland that docked in New York City on 20 October 1903, he does not seem to have returned to Eliza or to his children.  Instead, he traveled to Oklahoma.

A family anecdote states that Franz met his third wife, Mina Fischer, on a return voyage from Germany.  According to Cynthia Forrest, their great-granddaughter, "... Mina had traveled to the U.S., as her brother was already here from Germany, and she worked as a domestic.  She was a Fischer who married a Fischer and had one child, Anna.  She and Anna had traveled to Germany to visit Mina's family and met Franz on the return trip when he was traveling as a second class passenger from Switzerland to the U.S.  We also have a brochure outlining the ship's features and passenger list of the two classes of passengers - Franz was on the list.  We have a copy of a letter Franz sent to Mina before their marriage...."

Franz Stauble married Christina Wilhelmine Fischer, a widow with a daughter, on 28 March 1904 in Quanna, Hardeman Co., Texas.  Christina was born 20 September 1870 in Germany.  Her first husband was Ernest Fischer.  Their daughter, Anna Bertha Fischer, was born 9 October 1897 in San Francisco, California.  Ernest died in 1899.  "Mina" was 29 years younger than Franz and younger than his three oldest children.

On 16 September 1905, Mina gave birth to a daughter, Clara Edna Stauble, in Harmon Co., Oklahoma.

Franz Stauble died 19 October 1919 at his home near Eldorado, Oklahoma.  He was 78 years old.  He was buried next to his first wife, Nancy, in Buck Creek Cemetery, Henry Co., Indiana.  

Mina (Fischer) Stauble died 2 August 1942 in Eldorado, Oklahoma.  She is buried in Eldorado Cemetery.
