Joseph Markwood Rheuble |
The Rheuble line is one where I have hit a dead end pretty quickly, with my husband's great grandfather, Joseph Markwood Rheuble. We have his birth as 6 February 1872 in Grant Co., West Virginia. His parents are currently unknown.
As you can see from the information below, I have a lot of blanks to fill in on this family.
I found a Joseph Ruble, age 8, on the 1880 census for Grant Co., West Virginia, born in West Virginia with parents born in Virginia, but he is listed with a Henry G. and Catherine Hasha (ages 63 and 66 respectively) and a Charles Pannel, age 25. This Joseph's relationship (if any) is not stated. This is the right place and the boy is the right age, but so far, I've not found any connection with a family named Hasha or Pannel to link this Joseph Ruble to our Joseph Rheuble. It MIGHT be him, but it might not.
He married Louisa Virginia Sherman probably about 1890, but I have not found their marriage record. Louisa was born on 27 January 1867 in Hardy Co., West Virginia; she was the daughter of Philip Sherman and Rebecca Hulver.
Louisa Virginia (Sherman) Rheuble |
The 1900 census shows the family in Grant District, Grant Co., West Virginia. The name is spelled "Ruble." The 1910 census shows them in South Fork District, Hardy Co., West Virginia. The name is again spelled "Ruble."
The Rheuble home in West Virginia |
By the 1920 census, Joe and his family were in Miami Co., Ohio. The surname was spelled "Rheuble."
By the 1930 census, Joe was lodging in New Carlisle, Ohio with the family of Harvey Baer. Louisa was found living with her daughter, Lulu Kinner, and her family in Bethel, Clark Co., Indiana. Her marital status is listed as divorced. I have not found any divorce records, however.
Louisa Virginia (Sherman) Rheuble died 15 January 1935 in Dayton, Ohio. She was buried in New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, Clark Co., Ohio.
The 1940 census shows Joseph Rheuble boarding with the family of Fred and Ethel Ream in New Carlisle, Ohio.
Joseph Markwood Rheuble died 20 October 1944 at the Montgomery County Home, Dayton, Ohio. He was buried in New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, Ohio.
I know of the following children of Joseph M. and Louisa:
Overton Lee Rheuble |
Overton Lee Rheuble, born 6 June 1891 in Moorefield, West Virginia. Married first, Rocena (maiden name unknown) and second, Goldie (maiden name unknown). Died 25 February 1973 in New Carlisle, Clark Co., Ohio. Buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Tipp City, Miami Co., Ohio.
Cleal Francis Rheuble |
Lula H. (Rheuble) Kinner |
Ollie M. Rheuble |
Lester B Rheuble |
Anna Susan Rheuble |
Anna Susan Rheuble |
Anna Susan Rheuble was born 6 August 1900 in Medley, Grant Co., West Virginia. She married Williard R. Bailey (date unknown). I do not know if they had any children. She died 11 November 1982 in Richmond, Indiana and was buried in Mound Hill Cemetery, Preble Co., Ohio.
George Samuel Rheuble |
Joseph Wellington Rheuble |
Joe's twin, Lemuel R. Rheuble was also born 19 October 1905. He died about 1907 at the age of about 2 years. There is an "Infant Rheuble" buried in Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, West Virginia who MAY be Lemuel, but so far that is not confirmed.
Alberta Virginia Rheuble |
My husband's line is from Joseph Wellington Rheuble, son of Joseph M. and Louisa Virginia.
Joseph was born in West Virginia and moved to the Dayton, Ohio area with his parents and siblings where he is found by the 1920 census. On 20 September 1924, he married Gladys Evelyn Mervin. Gladys was born 14 October 1905 on a farm about 4 miles west of Portland, Jay Co., Indiana. Her parents were John Henry Mervin and Rosie Ann Decker. I will probably do a separate post on Gladys.
Gladys E. Mervin |
David Markwood Rheuble |
In June 1934, Joe and Gladys were divorced.
On 20 July 1935, Joe married Annette Fay Shell, daughter of Charles Edgar Shell and Effie Lenore McNeilan. Annette was born 20 August 1910 in New Carlisle, Ohio.
Annette F. Shell |
Joseph W. Rheuble died of a heart attack in Dayton, Ohio on 17 May 1960. He was 54 years old. He was buried in New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, Ohio.
Annette (Shell) Rheuble died 19 July 1986 in West Palm Beach, Florida. She was cremated and buried in Florida. The Find-A-Grave memorial showing her buried in New Carlisle Cemetery is in error per close family members.
It would be wonderful to break through the brick wall of Joseph Markwood Rheuble. There are a few possible clues:
The middle name: "Markwood" of both Joseph and his grandon, David.
The Hasha family on the 1880 census in West Virginia.
The various families in West Virginia from 1880 and before with the surname "Ruble."
As always, if there are others researching this family or related families, I would love to hear from you.
