Presidents Day

Updated with a correction 2/21/17:

Since it is Presidents Day, I thought I'd look at some of the presidential connections I've found in the families I've researched.

Before I start, let me say up front that I have NOT thoroughly researched all these presidential family trees.  I have included information on the lines when I've come across a connection or common ancestor, but have not done my own research.  Therefore, as I've discussed in other posts, much of the information I'm sharing should be considered CLUES, not proven facts.  Maybe someday I'll have a chance to thoroughly research and confirm or disprove these lines.

I've not found many famous people in my own family lines.  I seem to quickly run into brick walls or reach the immigrant ancestor. 

There did seem, however, to be a possible connection to Abraham Lincoln.  Researchers believed that Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks, was the daughter of James (or Abraham) Hanks and Lucy Shipley.  There is, however, some question about Lucy Shipley's ancestry.  She may be the daughter of Robert Shipley and Sarah Rachel Dorsey.  If that is correct, her sister, Rachel Shipley, who married Richard Berry, is my ancestor.  That would make me Abraham Lincoln's second cousin five times removed.

Recent dna evidence, however, indicates that Lucy was not the daughter of Sarah Shipley, but instead of Ann (Lee) Hanks.  So, it looks like I am NOT connected to Lincoln after all.  Here is a brief article on the mystery of Nancy Hanks Lincoln's parentage.

The only other president I have found a possible connection to for my lines is Barack Obama; through his mother, Mr. Obama and I are apparently 11th cousins once removed.

Interestingly, my husband is also related to Barack Obama through a totally different line;  he and Mr. Obama are 9th cousins 2 times removed.  Their common ancestors are Edward FitzRandolph II and Elizabeth Blossom.

Because my husband is descended from several Mayflower passengers (Francis & John Cooke, Hester Mahieu, Richard Warren), he is related to a number of presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant (6th cousin 6 times removed), Franklin D. Roosevelt (8th cousin 3 times removed), George W. Bush (12th cousin), George H. W. Bush (11th cousin 1 time removed).  There may be others I have not yet discovered.

And just because I know my husband will like this, even though this is not a president, my husband and folk singer Pete Seeger are 10th cousins 2 times removed.
